Join me, professional landscape photographer Andrew Collett for a truly unique photography adventure in beautiful Tobermory, ON. During our 3 days together we will immerse ourselves in all aspects of photography and digital image processing. I will be teaching you everything I know about landscape photography including composition, camera craft, and digital image processing. The variety of photographic opportunities in the area is truly tremendous, from the quaint fishing village of Tobermory to the rugged cliff lined shores of Georgian bay and the wind swept beaches of Lake Huron and of course, The Bruce Peninsula National Park!
Our time together will be a combination of in the field shooting and digital processing sessions and will cover the following topics:
I will be taking you to some of my favourite locations in and around Tobermory where I will be teaching you a combination of technical and creative lessons that will ensure you are shooting for optimal quality while unleashing the creative potential of the scene. Topics covered in the field will include:
* Learning to shoot in manual mode for optimal aperture and shutter speed settings
* Reading and understanding the histogram
* How to choose the best exposure based on the information provided in the histogram
* Learning to manually focus for maximum depth of field
* Equipment selection, what works and what doesn't’t.
* Crafting compositions that recreate a sense of "depth"
* Understanding visual rhythm and balance
* Selecting compelling subject matter
* Choosing the right light and atmosphere
I will be teaching you the digital workflow I use to bring RAW files to life. Using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, I will teach you a workflow that produces optimal quality in a simplistic and easy to follow process. This is not about Photoshop tricks, it is about learning how to subtlety process your RAW file to bring out their best qualities and express your artistic vision.
* Colour Management and Monitor Calibration
* Raw workflow using Photoshop and Lightroom
* Using Photoshop to subtlety enhance your image
Do to the light hiking we will be doing in Tobermory participants must be comfortable carrying their camera gear for hikes of up to half an hour.
The workshop is open to anyone with a love of nature photography and who is looking to improve their skills. All skills levels are welcome however you will benefit most from the workshop if you are shooting with a digital SLR camera. Since I keep my groups small (8 people) I am able to spend as much time as needed with each individual to ensure they improve their photography in the areas that are most important to them.
During our workshop you will learn...
Image Quality - Learn to consistently take perfectly exposed, tack sharp images. Learn why it is critical to get it right in camera first rather than relying on post production to correct errors.
Wide angle or telephoto? Learn the creative impact that lens choice has on your photographs and how to find fresh viewpoints and open up creative doors by learning to see how your lens sees.
Composition and Subject Selection - Learn advanced creative techniques for composing your photographs and artistically placing your subject.
Light - The most important ingredient. Learn how to use natural light to inject drama, enhance colours, and create a sense of mood and atmosphere in your photographs.
I will be teaching the Raw processing workflow using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. If you do not own a copy of Photoshop or Lightroom you can download a trial version from their website.
Arrive at the Bruce Anchor Motel located right near the docks in Tobermory in time for the 4:00pm orientation and overview of our 3 days together. We will then be heading out to photograph the early evening light and sunset. During our time out photographing I will be assisting everyone with their technique and teaching the steps I use to guarantee tack sharp, perfectly exposed photographs. This will include a thorough lesson on reading and interpreting your camera’s histogram.
Dawn is my favourite time of day to photograph and it provides by far the most dramatic and moody light. We will be in position to capture the pre-dawn twilight and continue shooting through the golden hours of the morning.
We will return back to the motel for a well deserved breakfast after which I will be covering how to process images using Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom. If you have a notebook computer be sure to bring it with either your copy of Adobe Photoshop and or Lightroom or at the least a downloaded 30 day trial version from Adobe. If you do not have a notebook computer I will be using my main computer system and will be able to demonstrate the process for you.
We will head out as usual for our sunrise shoot. After breakfast I will spend the final couple of hours critiquing images and recapping what has been covered. A review of the digital work flow will be covered and I will demonstrate how to use a few third party software plug-ins that I find helpful in my image processing work flow.
We can never predict the weather and conditions so the above outline might change slightly.
Each day I will spend some time reviewing and critiquing your photographs. If you are currently making your own prints please bring examples of a few that you are really proud of so that I can get a basic understanding of your current level of expertise.
