Photograph Springtime In Algonquin

Join me, professional landscape photographer Andrew Collett for a truly unique photography adventure in beautiful Algonquin Park. During our 4 days together we will immerse ourselves in all aspects of photography and digital image processing. I will be teaching you everything I know about landscape photography including composition, camera craft, digital image processing and fine art print making. I have been photographing Algonquin almost exclusively for the past 5 years and have come to know the landscape intimately. I will be taking you to some of my favourite locations giving you the opportunity to capture the amazing natural beauty of the park.

Spring is a wonderful time to photograph in Algonquin, the lakes and rivers are full and running strong while the cool nights and warm days create the perfect recipe for misty morning sunrises.  Also, spring is the time when the Moose are most active with their newborns and are almost a guarantee to see along Algonquins roads and bogs.

Who Should Attend?
The workshop is open to anyone with a love of nature photography and who is looking to improve their skills. All skills levels are welcome however you will benefit most from the workshop if you are shooting with a digital SLR camera. Since I keep my groups small (8 people) I am able to spend as much time as needed with each individual to ensure they improve their photography in the areas that are most important to them.

During our workshop you will learn...

Camera Craft & Technique
Image Quality – Learn to consistently take perfectly exposed, tack sharp images. Learn why it is critical to “get it right” in camera first rather than relying on post production to correct errors.
Perspective & Lens Choice –Wide angle or telephoto? Learn the creative impact that lens choice has on your photographs and how to find fresh viewpoints and open up creative doors by learning to see how your lens sees.

Composition & Light
Composition and Subject Selection– Learn advanced creative techniques for composing your photographs and “artistically” placing your subject.
Light – The most important ingredient. Learn how to use natural light to inject drama, enhance colours, and create a sense of “mood” in your photographs.

Digital Image Processing & Printing
Learn the “Fine Art” work flow for properly processing your digital photographs. From the Raw Converter to the final print, I will be covering all the steps I use to create my fine art prints.

Thursday
Arrive at Killarney Lodge nestled right on the shores of Lake of Two Rivers in Algonquin Park in time for the 4:00pm orientation and overview of our 4 days together. We will then be heading out to photograph the early eveing light and sunset. During our time out photographing I will be assisting everyone with their technique and teaching the steps I use to guarantee tack sharp, perfectly exposed photographs. This will include a thorough lesson on reading and interpreting your camera’s histogram.

Friday

Dawn is my favourite time of day to photograph the landscape in Algonquin and it provides by far the most dramatic and moody light. We will be in position to capture the pre-dawn twilight and continue shooting through the golden hours of the morning.

We will return back to the resort for a well deserved breakfast after which I will be covering how to process images using Adobe Camera Raw. If you have a notebook computer be sure to bring it with either your copy of Adobe Photoshop and the Raw Converter or at the least a downloaded 30 day trial version from Adobe. If you do not have a notebook computer I will be using my main computer system and will be able to demonstrate the process for you.

Saturday
The day will be similar to Friday with the exception of going to different locations for our sunrise and sunset shoots. I will also be expanding on what I taught you during the previous digital processing session to include sharpening, monitor calibration, soft proofing, and of course printing. I will have on hand an Epson 3880 printer to demonstrate the complete fine art printing work flow from Raw file to final print. Each of you will be able to work on your images and then create a fine art print.

Sunday
We will head out as usual for our sunrise shoot. After breakfast I will spend the final couple of hours critiquing images and recapping what has been covered. A review of the digital work flow will be covered and I will demonstrate how to use a few third party software plug-ins that I find helpful in my image processing work flow.

We can never predict the weather and conditions so the above outline might change slightly.

Photo and Print Critiques
Each day I will spend some time reviewing and critiquing your photographs. If you are currently making your own prints please bring examples of a few that you are really proud of so that I can get a basic understanding of your current level of expertise.
